Dr. Dave Venable is a former NSA intelligence officer, cybersecurity executive, strategic risk advisor, and the originator of Synthetic Asymmetry. He chairs the Institute for Strategic Risk and Security (ISRS), a Geneva-based nonprofit focused on democratic resilience, cybersecurity, and post-conflict recovery, and serves as Managing Director of Venable Strategic.
His career includes signals intelligence and offensive cyber operations at the National Security Agency; executive leadership as Vice President and CISO of Masergy, which was acquired by Comcast Business; and founding Vanda Security, where he served as CEO until its acquisition. He has taught cybersecurity and cryptography at Southern Methodist University and the National Cryptologic School and holds U.S. Patent No. 10,469,482.
His Synthetic Asymmetry framework examines how actors use converging technologies to achieve strategic effects disproportionate to their resources. First introduced in The Cipher Brief, it informs his research on cyber conflict, geopolitical risk, and democratic resilience. He speaks internationally on cybersecurity and strategic risk, with appearances at Black Hat, the Warsaw Security Forum, Cyber Future Dialogue in Davos, and the G20’s Think20 (T20).
He serves on the boards of the Cyber Future Foundation and the Alliance for Innovation and Infrastructure, where he is also a Senior Cybersecurity Fellow, and on the UNT NEXUS National Security Advisory Council.
In 2019, Security magazine named him one of its Most Influential People in Security. He is also featured in the Tribe of Hackers book series, and his commentary has appeared in BBC News, Bloomberg Businessweek, Forbes, and other outlets. He is featured in Midnight in the War Room, alongside General David Petraeus, Jen Easterly, Chris Inglis, and other senior national security figures. The documentary explores the human stakes of cyber conflict and premiered at Black Hat USA in August 2026.
Paper and panel discussion hosted by the Institute for Strategic Risk & Security and the George W. Bush Institute.
